2019 kicked off to an incredible start here in Sydney, Australia. With Sydney siders in holiday mode, the beach was a popular hit, as always. January & February have flown by, leaving Summer behind and the Autumn air particularly noticeable around us.
In this blog I have shared some highlights from the start of the year; from explosions of colour in the surf at dawn, to the first decent swell periods very welcomed to our shores, and a weekend adventure to Turon Valley.
Let's begin on 1.1.2019 // New Year’s Day at Manly Beach…
Manly Beach. What a sight. Locals and tourists alike flock to one of Sydney’s most popular beaches.

3.1.2019 // Sunset over the local, Shelly Beach. One of Australia’s East coast’s only West facing beaches.

8.1.2019 // Underwater at Shelly Beach. There is always something to see on every dive here at Shelly, the main attraction for me living here and creating my imagery.
One of the bigger sting-rays I’ve seen here. This old girl probably had a 2m wingspan.
Kitted out by Dafin Australia. These things have changed the game in the swim fin world, definitely recommend.
9.1.2019 // With a good run of incredible underwater clarity I was back out to The Bower. Some fun little peelers always add to the aesthetic of this surf break.
Using a slower shutter speed underwater to create a flow of movement as a surfer passes by on a wave.

16.1.2019 // Clovelly. Who would have thought a slab of concrete would be such a hit with the locals. Must be the very inviting crystal clear waters for a refreshing dip.

20.1.2019 // A special one. I woke up earlier than usual. There was a distant passing thunderstorm on the horizon and a whole array of cloud formation in the sky, some of which was already being illuminated by the distant rising light of dawn. I was the first on the beach, 2nd to the sand grooming machine whirring past perfecting the sand for the new day. By this point the sky had already turned a deep purple…
As the sun slowly edged its way closer to the horizon the sky began to light up. Bright pinks were strewn across the sky…

This sunrise easily goes down as one of the best I have ever seen. An incredible array of colour across the entire sky. It will unlikely be matched by any other for some time to come. And it didn’t stop here…

Fire. As the sun came up over the horizon the sky exploded with reds and oranges, creating a golden ocean and an incredible sight to start of your morning walk.
21.1.2019 // Another fiery spectacle this time as the sun sets over the Hawkesbury River and Cottage Point. Located in far North Sydney, the Hawkesbury is a hidden jewel.

2.2.2019 // Queenscliff. A fresh February morning and a decent swell to go with it! Some glassy conditions which attracted a good sized line-up.

A phenomenon that happens in the right conditions. Thousands of water droplets bounce on the surface after a breaking wave.

3.2.2019 // A classic Summer’s day at Shelly Beach.

3.2.2019 // Manly Beach. If you don’t often see the beach early morning, you would be surprised how busy the beach can be at dawn. Surfers making their way into the water for a pre-work paddle, joggers and fitness classes and the casual morning stroll along the waterfront are all very popular here in Manly.
5.2.2019 // Watching the sunrise from the ocean. I can guarantee there is no better way to start your day, as this surfer knows.

12.2.2019 // Queenscliff. I had just got home from work on golden hour. I saw the surf at Manly and I was straight down into the water with the camera. The offshore had picked up just the right amount and the banks at North Steyne were firing! There was an epic scene around Manly that arvo too with decent crowds on the beach cracking open a beer watching the waves as the light faded into dusk.

16.2.2019 // Turon Valley. A few mates of mine were keen to check out this national park for a weekend of camping and touring. We pulled in late on Friday night and cracked a few cold ones before rolling out the swags beneath probably the clearest night sky I’ve ever seen.

19.2.2019 // When the arvo Southerly hits, best bet is to head to Manly point. Always a fun little right hander for the log.
